Here’s what Damian says about life as an apprentice with Redbox Signmakers:
What has been the best thing about the last year?
I enjoy completing my Business Administration Units that my assessor provides for me as I am working towards my Level 2. My proudest moment was attending the Walsall Adult and Community College board of directors meeting on the 31st May 2016 where I spoke out in front of lots of important people about my apprenticeship and college. Also last year, I attended a national awards ceremony where I collected our ‘highly commended’ certificate – I had never done anything like that before!
What do your daily duties now involve?
My job title is business administrator so that means admin work, as well as housekeeping and more hands-on support tasks in the workshop.
What have you learned?
I have learned so much! On a practical level, this includes how to operate various machinery in the workshop, how to apply window graphics, produce invoices, delivery notes and quotations. When it comes to personal development I have learned a whole lot more and continue to learn every day – I relish the challenges each day brings and am grateful for all the support around me.
What are you still learning?
Plenty – including how to transfer files on the CNC machine.
What challenges do you feel you have overcome?
Thanks to the help and support I have received from Ian, Martin and Carl, I have really improved on my confidence.
What are your hopes for the coming month in terms of the work you are doing?
I am hoping to be more involved in the IT side of the company. I have also signed up for level 3 Business Administration.
What are your hobbies outside work?
Listening to music, working on designs to start up my own company in years to come, socialising with friends, listening to entrepreneur/business audio books.
What is your biggest work ambition and how is your time at work now from day to day helping you with that?
My biggest ambition is to complete level 2 Business Administration and work my way up to Level 5 Management so that I have enough experience behind me to start up my own business. I have always wanted to start up my own clothing company.
